Manon Cousins

Manon was born into a family of artists. Her parents were traveling musicians, they made people dance. She began music in this universe, accompanying her family in their performances. She played the piano and the organ, sang at village parties, weddings, dances, fairs or at the theatre. She entered the conservatory of Burgundy and enrolled in singing and writing courses, classical music theory and jazz. She discovered choir and a capella singing there. She was soon contacted to give singing lessons to the youth choir of Chalon-sur-Saone Cathedral and Autun. While Manon has performed Classical song she has also worked on jazz and French song programmes.

She also tried trip-hop with friends, sung in a classical electro project and worked in cabaret. She met ANÚNA singers Elodie and Pauline when she entered a musical theatre school and formed the trio Les Itinérants 5 years later. Within this a cappella project she discovered the work of Anúna and Michael Mc Glynn. It soon became clear that the deep harmonic work of Anúna would conquer her heart.

“Indeed, working around specific and wholesome chords, Anúna still manages to be able to transcribe emotions, landscapes, timeless feelings with a great sobriety by bringing touches of colours and texture.

We could naturally compare their work to a painter’s approach. This point seems important to me in the search for a more global art; to be able to create bridges in between artistic areas and views. Nowadays, the artist, anxious to sell its work and "succeed" in the eyes of a society that behaves more as a compulsive consumer than as an art lover, is sometimes under the influence of the idea of pleasing rather than the sincerity of his own words and beliefs.

I deeply feel that Anúna returns to the stem of art itself. By asking artists to leave aside their "idea of the piece", this project allows singers to perform in a greater simplicity. It requires presence and a state of observation devoid of judgment or personal interpretation. Without a choir leader we ought to connect with each other, take our responsibility and take our place in the group. It is nice to follow someone, though I sense a pre-eminent freedom when based on the energy of the group. I am really grateful to be a part of it.
