M’ANAM : Gunnarshólmi

"I am a classical singer, self-taught guitarist, a mountaineer and a computer scientist. My hobbies mainly revolve around nature and the endless possibilities it has to offer. I love spending time in the outdoors, everything from fly-fishing in the endless streams to hanging on the side of a big rock or even a frozen waterfall with axes in hand.

My plan had always been to become a singer but while I was studying classical singing in the Netherlands my hearing started to deteriorate. It was a total shock dealing with hearing loss while studying music. Fortunately I had met a group of amazing lads while studying abroad who supported me during this difficult time in my life. Together we founded an A Capella group called Olga Vocal Ensemble. I feel very privileged having such amazing friends and they have kept me going.

I graduated with a bachelors degree in classical singing in 2015 and continued to sing and work with Olga for a few years. During all of this I had been working as a tour guide in Iceland during summertime and eventually decided to give the outdoors more attention. In the beginning of 2017 I decided to put the singing on hold and focus more on being a professional guide. In September 2017 I travelled to Alberta, Canada for a three month long mountaineering course where I learned a lot about interacting with and respecting Mother Nature, whether it was just camping out or doing a multi-pitch rock/ice climb.

Just as I was moving further away from music I crossed paths with Michael McGlynn. Coincidentally it turned out that we had similar problems regarding our hearing. He invited me to sing with ANÚNA and then later wrote a song for me that would be one of the sparks that ignited M’ANAM. The song is called “Gunnarshólmi”, a setting by Michael of the famous Icelandic poem that describes natural world and references stories from the area I grew up in. Since I met the other singers of ANÚNA and M’ANAM it has been great to be able to step back into the world of singing. The music sung by ANÚNA is very powerful and brings people from all over the world together, sharing the experience of the Irish language and culture. M'ANAM is also very exciting in the way that it bridges the two worlds, Ireland and Iceland.

I worked as a guide until the pandemic hit, but as many of you can understand, my livelihood was off-limits during that time. There were no tourists and no opportunities to sing. So I decided to go back to school and study computer science. Today I work as a computer scientist for the department of information technology in the city of Kópavogur where I live with my girlfriend and our son Frosti Rafn (or Frost Raven).

Music has always been a huge part of my life and when looking back, singing and playing the guitar is something that has been extremely important to me. Every time there is a family gathering a song is never far away. I have been singing all my life and hopefully nothing will stand in the way of me continuing having my voice heard.”
